An Emotional Milestone when Rosenior Breaks Obstacles

This is a defining moment which recognizes the rise of a young, black English gaffer.'

"Liam Rosenior is a top coach that knows football back to front, which is the crucial factor.

"But, in my role as the Blues' first black player, it would be dishonest if I said this appointment fails to move me."

These were the words expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his historic first appearance for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute back in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club appointed RC Strasbourg manager Rosenior, aged 41, as their next head coach after the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also controls Chelsea.

There have been a mere 12 black managers – not including individuals holding temporary caretaker roles – in England's top flight since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is that he grew up and played not far from here, he knows the local fans," added Canoville.

"When children see a figure like Rosenior managing the team they support, a person who looks like them, who's from their ends, who comes from a family that champions equality… that's profound and shows them that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, this represents a massive step for the club, for the capital, for every young person dreaming big.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Exactly Does the Statistics Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the top flight's inaugural black head coach.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering black English boss in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other current top flight gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of managers of colour across the English game is matched by an absence of representation at executive level.

According to a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 report, 43% of top-flight players are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

However, analysis from the equality organization revealed just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership management teams across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic backgrounds.

Regarding senior coaching level, based on data provided by eleven clubs, the figure stands at two percent.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing head coaches – from the same eleven clubs, the figure is just five percent.

"He's certainly made history in terms of his appointment as Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of ability present within ethnic minority groups... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do. We need to continue to work hard to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Furthermore, Rosenior will become one of only four permanent English head coaches currently managing in the top flight – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which trails the continent's remaining major divisions regarding national representation.

Sixteen of the 20 first division coaches in Italy are from Italy, Eleven of the 20 in Spain, Twelve of the 18 in Germany and 10 of the 18 are French.

The present Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt all aspiring British managers with a youth development pedigree are, to some degree regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It's truly inspirational to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to witness an individual get that job with his background and everyone hopes he does really well."

Liam Rosenior

Liam Rosenior becomes Chelsea's second-ever African heritage manager following in the footsteps of Ruud Gullit.

It is vital to remember – he's there based on talent'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of West London clubs, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint culminating in a brief stint in charge of the third-tier club Brentford back in 2006.

Two years ago, he received an MBE in that year's Honours List for his services to tackling inequality within the sport and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he followed his father's footsteps. He began writing a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine ability and said opportunities should be given on merit.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: how significant under-representation leads to a failure to understand of players from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" and "emotional", but said he could relate to the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to join him with a move from Strasbourg to West London this summer.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a homophobic slur. He pledged support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and authored an open letter to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

Rosenior has since built his reputation as a manager – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

Rosenior said goodbye at Strasbourg earlier this week before signing a long-term deal with the Blues.

Chelsea had the Premier League's pioneering black boss with Gullit and the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.

Elliott later held multiple senior positions, including the FA's equality board|
