An Prediction Market User Earned $436,000 from Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from non-public details of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Predictions
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the hours before former President Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
One account, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement
Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
But these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," said an industry expert.
A handful of other platform users also profited tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.
Legal Questions Intensifies
Politicians are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week would prevent federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Market Background
Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to political events.
This sector faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is against the law in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
