Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
