The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
