Jailhouse Shock: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He fought justice and the law triumphed.

A couple of months after receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “annihilate” the nation's political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro finally seems destined for incarceration.

Imminent Incarceration

The found-guilty coup-monger – who has been living under residential detention in his estate while a series of judicial steps and petitions play out – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the next few days, amid growing talk that he will be sent to a well-known high-security prison.

Past Comments on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the conservative former military man showed little compassion for the country's jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we give those scoundrels a good life?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to finish in prison, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Jail Location Discussion

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, a group of four this week visited the complex in an apparent bid to dissuade the judiciary from sending him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, stated he expected the septuagenarian politician to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious gut problems – the outcome of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 election race – implied it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is very grave. He cannot to manage if they take him to Papuda … It would be awful,” he added, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells containing forty detainees: “That’s practically one square metre per detainee.

“We talked to the inmates and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the awful food,” remarked the senator.

Allies Speak Out

He is not the sole person voicing opinions before the former president’s anticipated incarceration.

Writing in a prominent newspaper, one more backer, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to witness “the greatest unfairness in its history”.

“It represents an unfairness that gnaws the spirits of millions people in Brazil,” the former minister said.

Varied Public Response

It is possibly correct considering the substantial backing Bolsonaro holds on the conservative side. Yet his anticipated incarceration has also warmed the feelings of many individuals who believe he deserves to be jailed for plotting to stop the incoming president from taking power – and even conspiring to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a representative for the incumbent president's Workers’ party, commented: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. No one wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to get proper treatment – but respectful care while incarcerated. He cannot carry on being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years praising the tough handling of inmates, had suddenly realized to their rights. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently claimed that civil liberties are not for criminals – decided to tour a prison to find out what circumstances are truly like,” he stated.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, demeaning treatment”.

Likely Prison Conditions

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently contains about thousands of detainees, his expected location looks to be a nearby prison for law enforcement and other “particular” inmates called Papudinha (Small Papuda).

The accommodations are much more pleasant than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the spectacular presidential palace, about a short distance away.

As per information, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – approximately the area of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 sq metre restroom with a bathing area and a 12 square meter balcony. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a TV and also a small fridge in his room as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report stated.

Political Reactions

He criticized the rumoured proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the presiding magistrate who oversaw Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his fate in the {
