Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
