Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
