New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD released security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
