NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue during his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly following his triumph in November.

"This decision rested on the security of my family and the need to directing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will always live within me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he is from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

Tenants see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
