A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country battling entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on a Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the 40-year-old presenter was accosted by a trio of assailants, one of whom shot at him before escaping on foot.

The motive behind the attack is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Authorities revealed that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a building in the vicinity of the city center landmark.

He had spent several hours at the site managing the implementation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, as per local media.

"It is alleged the victim was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," an official report stated.

CCTV footage reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a security uniform shooting on Stock before running away.

The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but fell down across the street.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the assault.

Important clues, like spent shells, were recovered from the crime scene.

Call for Public Assistance

Authorities have requested anyone who saw the event who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.

"We know they covered significant ground after the shooting, and police have been following their trail to find their location," stated a police chief.

Family and Public Reaction

His family member, Nicole Stock, stated the relatives are devastated to come to terms with the loss.

"I am in shock. I am shattered," she said.
"Everyone understood he was a champion for numerous individuals. He addressed issues courageously about subjects not many people were willing to speak about. This is a tremendous loss."

She urged the citizens to refrain from sharing disturbing footage from the scene, noting this was an deeply traumatic time, especially for Stock's three sons.
