The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.

The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.

However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
