The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
